Oh, Why Music?

My mom gave me a violin for my 11th birthday in September. She said, “This instrument’s sound suits you, you’d better take a lesson and play it!”. I'd not heard the violin’s sound before until I took a violin course at home and listened to classical music, like a lot... I never thought I would love it! Violin was not the first instrument I learned but that was the beginning of my serious 'relationship' with music. Well, I had never been in my life was moved by the sound of a musical instrument, but violin did move me. The emotion, when violins' bow attaches to the string and starts to vibrate, resonates into the ears, my heart was trembling and moved me into tears. Oh, that was the first moment when I listened to a violin piece, the saddest ever.... “Schindler’s List” by John Williams. Back in my childhood time, I always cried listen to this haunting and super melancholy violin piece, which almost played in every obituary on TV. To me, this song always recalls me about tragedies, deaths and griefs as well as represents a human frailty. Since the violin has a powerful emotional impact through the expression of its sounds, I had my own wish to play this instrument and touch someone's heart :) Well, it also has added such a value in my life and I have built more personal connection compare to any other instruments I play.

My relationship with music is growing much deeper until I decided to pursue a music degree (during that time I was studying International Relation in Turkey, but then I moved back and studied music in the arts institute). It was a tough decision but I convinced myself that I just wanted to follow my passion and it has never been easy as many people around me opposed my choice for being a music major. The only reason is because making a steady living as a musician is almost difficult to achieve. Though so, I got two principles in my life; music is my true obsession so I just need to go for it and never look back; having career in music does not always mean to be a performing musician or famous recording artist because there are many ways in music that could create an opportunity to a new career (I am working on it!). Meanwhile, it's not easy to be a music student, but many people think that being a music student is only about playing the music (so, what's the difference with taking a music course?). In fact, I found many obstacles during my music school year, such as lack of motivation, long hours of practice, "on-stage" nervousness, high competition among peers, and so on, but the struggle of 4 years was paid off. I obtained my bachelor degree (BA/Sarjana Seni) in 2015 and it did not stop there. Though I was not quite sure about my career plan that time, I dared myself to continue a master degree in Psychology of Music in the UK (2016). So "Why the psychology of music?" and the following question is "What is a psychology of music?" :D (I guess that is gonna be the topic for next blog post). Anyway, I have a very big curiosity about music that became my only motivation to study master in music. I had a question in mind such as "Why I love music?", "Why music is so important to human life?", and "How can music influence human brain and behaviour?". It is such a mystery I want to figure out, and studying music psychology is the way. Hopefully I could share my understanding about music in this blog :) So, for the next post, I would like to present the omnipresence of music in human everyday lives that intend to understand the psychological process of musical behaviours such as listening, performing, composing music, and sooooo many topics I would like to share (Oh, I am excited!).
Well, I guess anyone has their own call, and my call is music. Back in time, music was all just about a hobby and I have been really into music, like playing instruments, listening to it and watching gigs. Yet now, I just realized myself cannot live without music and I am having a deep connection with it. So, here, what I am trying is to make people see music in a different way like it’s beyond entertainment and a hedonic matter, and we should realize when in fact we cannot live without music. Music has a significant role in human life and the point is that it touches the deepest part of our emotion and feeling while nothing else does. Some people may not aware of that, but they still and always attach to music.
See you in the next post!
