AURORA: Infections Of A Different Kind (STEP 1)

"Music is not something you should keep for yourself. It can’t be put in a cage, because it’s wild and alive.” AURORA AKSNES

The combination of an ethereal voice with dreamy electronic backing music catch my attention to dive into her songs. Aurora, a Norwegian singer-songwriter who began playing melodies when she was six years old in the attic and writing songs aged 9 with the influence of Enya, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. This fact WOWed me anyway, I mean as a child in her age has such unusual (but cool) musical taste. I guess no wonder how she develops a unique and innovative style plus with the influence of Nordic music in many of her songs. After her last release album in 2016 'All My Demons Greeting As A Friend', she finally came back with more empowering works on her latest album 'Infections Of A Different Kind - Step 1' (Step 2 will be dropped either next year or 2020. Oh, I cannot wait!). She stated, "Step 1’ is a natural step after my first album, which was about looking into yourself, looking at all of it and accepting all of it. It’s easier to be numb, rather than in contact with your own emotions. That was my biggest mission back then – to make sure that we’re not afraid to feel, not afraid to cry, accepting our demons as part of evolving as a human.”

So yeah, I am excited from the first time I listen to 'Churchyard' in my #Spotify 'New Music Friday' playlist. Her solid vocal harmonisation at the beginning of the song is so haunting that gives me a goosebump until my heart rushes when the beats come into my head. Though this song is evoking, if you dig down into the lyrics you will listen to a soaring and heavy emotion. It talks about a process of gaining a power to become a warrior of themselves and to take revenge on the one who hurt them. We may interpret them as violence victims who experienced trauma. Yeah, her self-sensitivity to the world events become her main inspiration to write songs, and she barely talked about herself or her own experiences to her creation (only 'Lucky' and 'Runaway' in the first album).

Another magical upbeat piece called 'Queendom' was inspired from her trip to Brazil where she experienced a bad situation of a political status around same-sex love. She naturally made this song to create a better world from her perspectives. This music video was released earlier in May 2018 and has gained millions of views on #Youtube. "Queendom is about celebrating all the differences in us. It’s about celebrating the women and the children and animals and the men also. The quiet ones and the introverts, where they can sing and be seen. It’s about the shy people and the lonely people and I hope it can be a place where we can come and be lonely together and then not be lonely anymore. Queendom is a place for all of us." I love the music video as it shows her uniqueness and powerful message about diversity. And still, the fashion style and her body movement is really something. She looks like a white eagle :)

The new 8-tracks full-length album in which some of them nuanced an anthem with a touch of tribal elements on the beat and vocal chants with overall appears as a dark, deep and emotional songs that will echo in your head. Back in time, I was blown away by her 'Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1)' and since then I believe she is just a beautiful weirdo who turns melodies into a magical song with powerful lyrics to be heard all over the world.
